two that will hopefully appeal to both player types in the
long run.”
As you can imagine, rebuilding a division is no small task. Vox,
however, has considerable experience with this. For those who
may not have been around the 12th long enough to see Vox
hopping from one division to another, he has been involved with
rebuilding two previous divisions: MACO and Section 31. MACO,
with its focus on STFs and ground PvP, was a small division for
a long time as well, back when the STFs were longer and the
rewards for doing them more than once left much to be desired.
Even before the STFs were changed by Cryptic and made more
accessible to many players, MACO had become a larger division
due to the passion of the entire MACO team. Passion, Vox be-
lieves, is the key to rebuilding a division. “Not just by the VA but
by every member of the division no matter how many members
there are, they need to have the passion and the desire to put in
the work and make the division the best it can possibly be, oth-
erwise it’ll never happen no matter how good your idea may be.”
Vox elaborated. “During the MACO rebuild it was a team effort
from everybody, ranging for Ezme and myself to Anubis, Forge,
Zero and everybody else there during that time. We were all
pretty much thrown into our positions without really knowing
what we were doing or how we were going to turn it around. But
the one thing we all shared was that we cared about the division
and wanted it to be a success and without that I don’t know
what would have happened to the division.”
The other division Vox had a huge hand in restructuring was
Section 31, previously known as “Intelligence”, or “Intel”. As In-
tel had strictly a “General PvE” focus, it tended to get lost with
Engineering and Exploration, also PvE focused. While Section
31 did pick up “External Fleet Security” as an additional area, it
didn’t really change its focus for the majority of the division as
the security checks are restricted to members with a fleet rank
of Commander and above. What did change the division was the
passion of its members, and making an active effort to utilize
the 12th forums as a way of getting to know each other and
having fun together. “With Section 31 it was pretty much let’s
have our focus be on the forum stuff and then we can do a bit of
everything in game, just have fun and not worry about it.”
Obviously restructuring Starbase Operation’s isn’t exactly like
either of the two. Vox believes SBO’s biggest hurdle right now
is strictly in the numbers. “Since our focus revolves around mis-
sions that require either 5 people or 15-20 people we need more
than the 6 people we currently have in order to setup regular
runs and at different times so that everybody can get involved,
while at the same time keeping things fun and interesting in the
division, both on the forum and in game to keep people active.”
It is the everlasting “Chicken or the Egg” question: which comes
first? Vox plans to tackle both at once, believing that using the
division members he has now, and utlizing their passion and
ideas, is key to building a large and successful division.
“You have to be willing to confer with your members and share
your ideas for a rebuild with them to get them involved in the
process as much as you can. Not only will it unify the division
and hopefully motivate them to help with the rebuilding but
they may have ideas that you haven’t considered or spot flaws
and improvements to the plan.”
